How to Effectively Color-Block Your Kitchen

You may have heard about color blocking in fashion – a trend so popular that it is now used in interior design. Color blocking involves taking colors from opposite sides of the color wheel and pairing them to create unique combos. If you’ve always liked playing with color, you may find this design trend to your liking. A premier kitchen remodel company in the area, DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of The Woodlands, shares how to incorporate color blocking into your space.

  • Take small steps. Some homeowners are instantly on board with a new design trend, while others take a more careful approach. If you’re one of the latter, you may be wary of changing too many aspects of your existing kitchen. No worries – it’s okay to start small, such as adding some colorful kitchenware, furniture or appliances. This introduces color blocking to your kitchen in a way that can easily be changed.
  • Pick colorful base cabinets and pair them with neutral uppers. One classic approach to color blocking a kitchen is to choose a vibrant color for the lower cabinets, then going for neutral tones, such as white or beige, for the upper ones. This creates a livelier look while still maintaining a sense of balance in the space. Selecting colorful upper cabinets, then using neutral colors for the lower cabinets, countertops and backsplash, can also provide the same result.
  • Stick to one color. Is it still considered color blocking if you only use one color? It is, actually – just make sure to use different shades of the same color. This is a subtler way to add color blocking to your kitchen design, but it does provide more layers to the space and prevents visual clutter generated by too many clashing colors.
  • Use different colors on one wall. If you can’t commit to just one color, you can take the bolder approach by painting a geometric color-block motif on a kitchen wall. While this packs quite the visual punch, it generally only works well when the rest of your home has a contemporary design.
  • Choose a neutral palette. Those who aren’t a huge fan of vibrant colors can still color-block their kitchen using natural shades like white, beige, tan, brown and gray. One way to do this is by choosing white base cabinets to create a wonderful contrast with dark upper cabinets. Another example is to go for a wood-on-wood kitchen that uses different wood species for the cabinets, countertops and island.
