Project Overview
A Time Capsule Worth Updating. Not Erasing.
This Golden Valley California ranch rambler had sat largely untouched since the 1950s – original cedar ceiling, classic horizontal fireplace, and all the quiet character that comes with a home that has been genuinely cared for. The new owners were newlyweds and empty-nesters, each bringing their own style and needs to a house that deserved a thoughtful hand rather than a heavy one.
DreamMaker brought the home into the present by working with what was already there – adding natural elements, opening up the kitchen, and modernizing the spaces that needed it while leaving the period details that made the house worth buying in the first place.

About The Neighborhood
Golden Valley is one of the Twin Cities’ most established and design-conscious inner suburbs – tree-lined, well-kept, and full of mid-century homes that reward thoughtful renovation. A 1950s ranch brought carefully into the present fits this neighborhood as naturally as the cedar ceilings and cork floors that defined the era.
The Challenge
What Wasn’t Working
Before the remodel, the space faced several challenges:
- A kitchen cut off from the living room with a layout that limited efficiency and entertaining
- A pocket door from the foyer eating into valuable kitchen working space
- A breezeway with poor definition between the garage entry and sunroom
- An exterior service door and sidelight in the breezeway limiting privacy and wall space
- A fireplace with a dated wood front that needed modernizing without losing its original character
- No in-floor heat in the back entry or sunroom - limiting use of both spaces in colder months
- No outdoor entertaining space connected to the sunroom
- Two people with distinct styles and needs moving into one home with no unified design plan
The house had real integrity. What it needed was a designer willing to honor that while making room for the life this couple wanted to live in it.
“DreamMaker understood from the beginning that this wasn’t just a remodel – it was two people creating one home together. They helped us find the common ground in our styles and built a space that genuinely feels like both of us. The house keeps its 50s character in all the right ways and feels completely current everywhere else. We are so happy with how it turned out.”

Built Around How They Actually Live
DreamMaker approached the home as a whole – making structural, layout, and finish decisions that worked together rather than independently. Every change either improved function, honored the period, or both.
Key Improvements included:
- Pocket door from the foyer to the kitchen closed off - reclaiming working space in the kitchen
- Wall between the kitchen and living room opened up with a raised countertop added for serving during entertaining
- Breezeway wall added to define the back entry from the garage and better frame the sunroom
- Exterior service door and sidelight removed and replaced with a transom window - improving privacy and creating more usable wall space
- Birdseye maple cabinetry and cork flooring bringing natural warmth and a contemporary 50s feel throughout
- Original cedar ceiling retained to balance the darker cork floor and honor the period of the home
- Fireplace modernized with sheet rock over the wood front while preserving the original brick and low horizontal design
- In-floor heat added to the back entry and sunroom for year-round comfort and lower heating costs
- Large deck added off the sunroom for outdoor entertaining
