Project Overview

A Kitchen Designed to Bring Outdoors In

This Minneapolis family of four loved the character of their 1948 home, but the kitchen and dining rooms had never kept up with how they actually lived. Small, cramped, and disconnected from the backyard, the space made entertaining difficult and daily life harder than it needed to be.

DreamMaker – meeting the family for the first time over FaceTime in the early days of the pandemic – saw the potential in the existing footprint immediately. The result is a fully reimagined space built around openness, natural materials, and a genuine connection to nature, with gallery walls designed specifically to showcase the family’s art collection.

About The Neighborhood

Minneapolis’s established residential neighborhoods are full of 1940s homes with real character and families who want to update them thoughtfully rather than erase what makes them special. A kitchen rebuilt around natural materials, abundant light, and a strong connection to the backyard fits this kind of home and this kind of city perfectly.

The Challenge

What Wasn’t Working

Before the remodel, the space faced several challenges:

The home had character. The kitchen simply hadn’t been designed to live up to it.

BEFORE

“They love the layout our designer came up with – one they had never thought of themselves but that gave them everything they wanted and more. They are especially appreciative of the biophilic elements throughout the new kitchen, and the wall space to finally display some of their most personally meaningful art pieces.”

The Solution

Built Around How They Actually Live

DreamMaker removed the walls separating the kitchen, side entry, and dining room entirely – creating one open, connected space where traffic flows naturally around a large multi-function island. Every material and design choice from there reinforced the family’s connection to nature and to each other.
