How to Create a Dining Area When Your Home Doesn’t Have One

An open floor plan creates unique advantages and a few challenges. With no designated area for dining, you can switch up the layout of your interior furnishings as many times as you want, but it can also be tricky to make the dining area look like it belongs in the room. Today, top-rated interior and kitchen remodeler DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Wilmington shares three simple ways you can create a dining area if your home doesn’t have one.

Add a Bench or Banquette

Whether built-in or freestanding, a bench or banquette works best with a square or rectangular dining table. Simply swap out the chairs on one side with a bench. You can place the bench against a wall to save space. If creating a dining nook doesn’t sound appealing to you, you can place the table in the middle of the floor and opt for a tall-backed bench that could also function as a divider.

Use Contrasting Paint or Wallpaper

If you want a quick and easy way to create a dining area, paint the wall or corner where you’ll be placing your table. Using a contrasting color for your dining area can make it feel like a separate space, giving it a vibe that’s distinct from the rest of the room.

Put Down an Area Rug

Here’s an even easier solution: add something that you can replace or remove any time you feel like it. A rug can nicely demarcate the dining area, but make sure you get an appropriate size. As a rule of thumb, your rug should be bigger than your tabletop.
