5 Design Tips for Creating a Transitional Kitchen

A transitional kitchen is perfect for homeowners who want to incorporate traditional and contemporary elements into their space. Colors, textures, and designs are combined to create a cohesive look that is homely but modern.

No two transitional kitchens are exactly alike, though there are basic guidelines to take inspiration from when designing your own. A kitchen remodel company shares five of them here.

1. Use a Neutral Color Scheme

You want an understated, sophisticated look to your transitional kitchen. You can achieve this by strategically using a neutral color scheme throughout the space. Shades of brown, cream, gray, and more can highlight your favorite features or contrast with other eye-popping hues, adding balance and harmony to your kitchen design.

2. Work With Wood

Nothing is as effortlessly stylish and durable as a timber kitchen. After all, a transitional kitchen should be able to withstand heavy foot traffic. While rustic details and cozy corners might just be the ticket for a country kitchen, the Shaker design looks as good with modern elements as they do with vintage pieces. A simple round table with spindle-back wooden chairs and solid oak doors with pale gloss are a few examples.

3. Keep It Minimal

Keep the decorations to a minimum. You surely do not want to go overboard when creating a transitional kitchen. Drawers and doors are generally paneled, and a blend of real wood with painted finishes works beautifully to simulate the look and feel of an old-fashioned kitchen. During a kitchen renovation, opt for clean lines that put focus on functionality rather than style.

4. Maximize Natural Light

If there is one thing you want an abundance of in a transitional kitchen, it is natural light. A well-lit kitchen eliminates the need for artificial lighting and creates a comfortable space beneficial to your well-being. Incorporating energy-efficient windows is a good place to start. Using natural stone such as travertine can lift a scheme, as do painting walls in shades of white.

5. Embrace Brass

Brass in kitchen design has made a resurgence, and it is more in demand than ever. Known for its warm and tactile qualities, this metallic lends an elegant edge to any interior. Integrate it in features such as door knobs and light switches for a low-key luxe look.
