Top 4 Reasons to Document Your Home Remodel

Taking before-and-after pictures of your home is a great way to capture the impact of a remodel. But if you want to take a closer look or be able to properly track the progress of your project, it’s best to document the entire remodeling process from start to finish.

Benefits of Documenting Your Home Remodel

Have a Record of Who Did What

Sometimes a plumber, electrician and general contractor might be on-site simultaneously. In this case, it can be challenging to remember who did what during the remodeling process. With pictures, it is easier to identify who is accountable for certain aspects of your remodel in case something goes wrong later on.

Remember What’s Underneath the Surface

Maybe a different material was discovered underneath your flooring and you were not aware of it until your contractor discovered it during the renovation. Make sure to take a picture of the material so that you can proof of the material’s condition when it was uncovered. Typically, findings like this can alter remodeling plans, so be prepared for a change in your bathroom or kitchen estimate too.

Have Proof in Case of Code Violations

If you plan to sell your home after renovation, an inspector will check your property and make sure it’s compliant with local building codes. To avoid any potential issues, it’s best to have photos of the remodeling process, particularly the changes that were made in problem areas. This can prove that the issues in your home have been addressed, thus giving potential buyers peace of mind.

Create an Inventory

Take photos of your household items and other personal belongings, like artwork, before the renovation begins. These will serve as proof of the condition of such items prior to the remodel. If anything gets damaged or lost during the renovation, you can use these photos as documentation.
