Tips on Finding an Ethical Contractor

Some contractors in the home improvement and construction industry engage in unethical behavior and take advantage of their clients for their gain. On the flip side, not all contractors practice unethical behavior. You just need to know how to weed out the bad from the good.

How Ethics Build Trust

Ethics paves the way for two contracting parties to build trust with each other. If one side begins to engage in unethical behavior or practices, the trust and relationship between both parties starts to break down. This often causes a construction project to suffer. The other party will start to question whether other unethical behaviors have happened.

The Consequences of Unethical Behavior

Unethical behavior can be contagious in any company. For instance, if you notice that a representative of a remodeling company you’re keen on hiring engages in unethical behavior, then there’s a good chance that other employees also participate as well. To ensure your prospective contractor gives you an honest home remodel estimate, we’ve listed some of the most common unethical behaviors to look out for:

  • Bribing people/receiving bribes. This is when a contractor “pays” the powers that be so that they’re awarded a construction project or to turn a blind eye to subpar workmanship. Some may even pay bribes to make the approval processes easier, which can be even more problematic if the person receiving the bribe accepts it as standard practice.
  • Employing illegal immigrants. Some contractors employ workers without the correct documentation. This is unethical in the sense that they’re often being paid a below-minimum wage.
  • Not using the right materials on purpose. Some contractors try to cut costs by purchasing substandard materials, even if they don’t conform with the project specifications. These can pose problems that may only appear long after the project is completed.
