A Closer Look at L-Shaped Kitchens

If you are looking to update the look and function of your kitchen, the L-shaped kitchen is one of the best layouts to consider. It makes efficient use of space, looks tidy and can be a place where cooking and social interactions can be combined.

Today, the home remodeling experts of DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Wilmington take a closer look at the L-shaped kitchen layout, including its pros and cons and ways you can make the most of it.

About the L-Shaped Kitchen

As the name implies, this kitchen configuration utilizes two adjoining lengths of cabinets and countertops, just like the legs of the letter ‘L’. Each leg can vary in length depending on the available kitchen space.

A typical L-shaped kitchen layout has one side where the sink and countertop appliances are located. Smaller kitchen tasks are often done in this part of the layout. The other part of the L is where the range and refrigerator are placed. In addition to more storage, this area can be tailored for larger, time-intensive activities.

In other layout variations, the L-shaped kitchen can also include an island. The cooktop can be on one side and the sink on the other, with the refrigerator placed outside of the L. When you work with home renovation contractors, make sure to ask whether the L-shaped layout is right for you, as it will be largely influenced by availability of space and the existing floor plan.

The Pros

A well-planned L-shaped kitchen layout allows for versatility. Creating separate work zones helps ensure efficient and organized workflow. Preparing and cooking food becomes much easier since in this setup, more than one cook can be accommodated.

The L-shaped kitchen layout can be seamlessly connected with a larger room such as the dining area. Entertaining guests is easy with this setup; they can carry on a conversation with you and can even hang out where you’re cooking food.

The Cons

Unless you have ample space to build an island within the open space created by the L, you’ll likely be facing away from your guests as you prepare and cook food. This is usually a matter of personal preference, but if you think this won’t work, you might be better off considering another kitchen layout.

Adding an island within the L-shaped kitchen and placing an extra sink in it can also create another issue. While there will be more space for you to do meal preparation, it also means having to reconfigure the plumbing.
