Any successful home remodeling project will make a homeowner happy, but there are certain renovations that really up the ante when it comes to bringing joy to those living in the house. These projects were recently highlighted in the 2019 Remodeling Impact Report conducted by the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR).
About Joy Scores
NAR calculated “Joy Scores” based on the level of happiness reported by homeowners upon completion of certain remodeling projects. Joy Scores make it possible to compare how pleased the respondents were with the outcomes of their projects, with the highest possible score being 10.
The Rankings
Projects done by interior remodeling contractors earned some of the highest Joy Scores reported in the study. Complete kitchen renovations scored a perfect 10, with 93 percent of interviewed participants saying they enjoyed being at home more after their kitchens were remodeled. Closet renovations also received a Joy Score of 10, owing to the fact that most homeowners use their closets on a daily basis. Closet upgrades contribute not just to home organization, but also to how people feel when they get ready for the day.
Full-scale interior and individual paint jobs earned an impressive Joy Score of 9.8, thanks to the relative ease and speed of the project compared to the level of payoff. Sixty-eight percent of homeowners reported feeling a major sense of accomplishment from a simple paint job.
Along with kitchen remodeling, other high scorers included basement conversion, window replacement and bathroom remodeling. The survey demonstrates that when done right, a remodel has the power to evoke long-term happiness and contentment—all the more reason to choose the right contractor!
