A Quick Look at Shower Flooring Options

Before you’ve even looked up “bathroom contractors near me”, you may already have had an idea as to how you want your new bathroom to look. Rainfall shower? Check. Double sinks? Check. What about the shower floor? If you haven’t decided on this feature, here are the common options available to you.

Marble

Marble comes in two popular finishes: honed (matte) and polished (glossy). Its combination of swirls of cream and gray may be nothing new, but the natural beauty marble possesses still makes it a favored material among homeowners. It does need to be sealed to prevent scratches and stains. Honed marble is more resistant to scratches than its polished counterpart.

Travertine

Also a natural stone, travertine is available in a range of styles, including polished, honed, chiseled and tumbled. It’s typically a combination of earthy creams, grays, browns and golds and comes in the form of small designer tiles. Travertine is porous and needs to be sealed, but it provides good slip resistance.

Glass

Cool and contemporary, glass mosaics add a stroke of gloss or pop of color while being low-maintenance. No matter what you paid for it, glass almost always appears high-end, making it great if you’re looking for an elegant and opulent vibe. It has minimal slip resistance though, so it may not be ideal for homes with children or seniors.

Porcelain

Made with dense clay, porcelain tile is waterproof and durable. It can last for decades, making it a practical choice whether you’ll be living in your home for a long time or have plans to sell down the line. It also resists scratches and chemicals well. Porcelain can even be finished to appear like other materials such as marble or wood, all while being easy to care for. Keep grout lines minimal to ease cleaning demands.

Wood

Wood makes bathrooms appear cozy and minimalist at the same time. Wooden floors can sit above shower bases, draining effectively via slats to keep moisture issues to a minimum. As wood is weathered by water, it will require periodic maintenance to keep performing well.

Pebbles

If you want an organic look, pebbles might be right up your alley. They offer good slip resistance and can be appealing for their one-of-a-kind look, much like what other natural stones have to offer. The uneven texture may not be to your liking, however.

Acrylic & Fiberglass

A common shower pan material, acrylic is built to last, lightweight and easy to install. Another popular shower pan material, fiberglass, is more affordable than acrylic, making it great if you need to work with a budget. It is also durable and commonly used for showers with unconventional shapes and sizes.
