Kitchen Island & Breakfast Bar: What’s the Difference?

Few people other than kitchen remodeling contractors actually distinguish between a breakfast bar and a kitchen island. Design experts may be a little more particular about which one is which, but many kitchens include both, depending on the size of the kitchen and its dimensions. Before you tackle your next kitchen remodel, it will be helpful to know a little more about the differences and similarities between the two structures.

Kitchen Island

Typically found in the center of the kitchen, the island is a countertop area that will usually be detached from any other part of the kitchen and won’t touch any other countertop or wall. It can have other uses in addition to serving as a space for food preparation, such as additional storage for kitchen utensils, cookbooks, small appliances and kitchen towels. You can get even more use from your island by adding seating so that it can stand in for the dining table.

Breakfast Bar

Similar in concept to the kitchen island, a breakfast bar can also provide you with additional storage and countertop space and, yes, more seating. The only difference is that a kitchen bar will typically attach to another countertop or extend out of a wall, effectively giving you only three usable sides. This design is more appropriate for a kitchen that offers a longer, rectangular shape. A kitchen bar can effectively divide your kitchen and dining spaces, while providing a larger countertop space as well as bar seating.
