Pendant Lighting for Kitchen Islands: Key Things to Know

Installing pendant lighting will instantly transform any room. Aside from providing illumination, it can beautify and improve the safety of your space. These are only among the many reasons to consider including pendant lighting in your next kitchen remodel

Keep reading for a quick guide on pendant lighting for kitchen islands.

Which Size and Style Should You Get?

To determine the size of the pendant lights you should hang above your kitchen island, you must find out the island’s width. Subtract 12 from the island’s width in inches. The answer is the ideal width of your new pendant lights. For instance, if your island is 30 inches, you should get fixtures not over 18 inches in diameter.

How Many Fixtures Should You Install?

Kitchen renovation experts recommend following the rule of three when it comes to pendant lighting placement. It’s where you arrange things in odd numbers, so they look more attractive. However, the number of fixtures you should get still depends on the size of your kitchen island. If your island is small, it might be enough to install two pendants.

Where Should You Place Your Pendant Lights?

Ideally, pendant lights must be positioned at least 6 inches from the island’s edge. The fixtures should also be 30 to 32 inches away from each other. This placement is suitable if you’re installing at least three pendant lights. Are you only getting two pendant lights? If so, they should be more than 30 inches from the island’s center.

How High Should They Be?

As a general rule of thumb, pendant lights should be at least 30 inches from the counter. Don’t forget to factor in your height to ensure you don’t hit your head while preparing or cooking meals. An experienced remodeler will consider everyone in your family to ensure you have a safe and comfortable space.
