Good bathroom design requires balance between function and form. Considering that every bathroom has its own set of requirements — making each project truly unique — getting that balance is easier said than done. In today’s post, DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Tyler shares insight on the most common design pain points encountered by remodelers, and solutions that don’t often impact the bathroom cost.
- Poor Lighting. Inadequate lighting can defeat even the best bathroom designs. It makes doing basic things like shaving or applying makeup difficult to do, and can even cause you to stub your toes or slip from an unexpected wet patch on the floor. Fortunately, poor lighting can be easily fixed after the fact. Dim light bulbs can be replaced with brighter ones. New fixtures can be installed with minimal use of fasteners. If you are planning a bathroom remodel, make it a point to set aside time during your consultation with your remodeler to discuss your lighting requirements.
- Inadequate Ventilation. If you’ve ever had to deal with a constantly-foggy bathroom mirror, “sweating” walls and lingering odors, your bathroom is inadequately ventilated. Installing additional equipment like dehumidifiers could work, but they’re just a temporary solution and their typically large footprint would take up precious bathroom real estate. Make it a point to include a good ventilation system as a line item in your bathroom quote when planning your remodel.
- Not Enough Space. Bathrooms, particularly in older homes, tend to be smaller than most other rooms in the house. While bathroom expansions are possible, it’s not always an option. This is where a good remodeling plan comes in — solutions like wall-mounted fixtures, vertical storage and glass partitions can free a lot of floor space and create an uncluttered look.
- Outdated Design. Some bathrooms look like they’re outdated, even when they’re not actually old. Sometimes it’s the previous owner’s (or designer’s) design choices. Sometimes it’s a failed attempt at following certain trends. Sometimes it’s just down to poor color choices. A simple coat of paint can be a quick solution, but some bathrooms may need more, from replacing the fixtures, vanity and cabinets to a full bathroom remodel.
