3 Low-Maintenance Countertop Choices for Your Kitchen Remodel

When it comes to your kitchen renovation plans, one of the most important features you need to focus on is the countertop. Not only should it match the rest of your space’s aesthetic and provide a durable surface for meal prep, it should also require little to no upkeep. Here’s a look at some of the lowest maintenance kitchen countertop choices as recommended by our design team.

Laminate

Laminate countertops became widely popular in the 1940s up to the 1960s because of their relative affordability. Thanks to recent manufacturing innovations, however, today’s laminates are much better than their predecessors. Modern laminate combines plastic resins with layers of cellulose by exposing them to intense heat and pressure. The result is a material that is durable and resistant to heat and scratches. Available in a wide variety of beautiful finishes, laminate countertops are more stain-proof and easy to clean than ever.

Soapstone

Soapstone countertops offer a warm look and cool feel, adding a distinct character to any kitchen space. Beautiful and smooth to the touch, soapstone countertops don’t require a sealant to preserve their appearance. Their surfaces are almost impervious to stains and spills because of the material’s nonporous composition, which is a plus if you are planning a low-maintenance kitchen remodel. They’re also among the most heat-resistant stone countertop choices available, which means setting a hot pan or pot on them won’t cause the surface to crack.

Engineered Stone

Also known as quartz, engineered stone countertops have a similar appearance to marble and granite.  The material is made of crushed quartz crystals bound together by a polymer resin. Despite this composition, they possess benefits not available in natural stone counterparts, including ease of maintenance.

Unlike other choices, engineered stone countertops are nonporous. This helps prevent bacterial growth on the surface and, since they don’t absorb liquids, they’re easier to clean up. You don’t have to use a chopping board to slice vegetables, meat or fish during meal preparations.
