In many homes, the mudroom serves as a second entrance where you can take off your shoes, outerwear and gear. It keeps water, dirt and salt from reaching the main rooms of your home and potentially damaging surfaces. However, your mudroom doesn’t have to serve only that purpose. You can play with different styles and incorporate other uses for your mudroom.
DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Tyler, one of the area’s top remodeling contractors, shares some tips on designing a mudroom.
Flooring
Your choice of flooring material should be based on two main considerations: 1.) it should be easy to clean and 2.) it should prevent slips and falls. That said, your best options for your mudroom flooring typically include absorbent natural stones such as slate and terracotta tiles. Brick is also a good option to consider, especially if you want to create an antique look. Linoleum and vinyl tile can do the job too; they are waterproof and easy to clean.
Storage
Order and organization are important in mudrooms, so make sure to invest in sturdy cubbies and cabinets. Don’t forget to have nooks at ground level for your boots and shoes. Meanwhile, coats and backpacks should be at eye level. Home remodeling experts also recommend having extra storage space for miscellaneous items such as towels and other outdoor items that you only get to use occasionally.
Seating
Mudrooms are usually limited on space, but this doesn’t mean you can’t have proper seating in this area. Opt for seating that can double as storage too. A storage bench can offer nooks for your footwear, or it can even hide pet accessories.
Functionality
Your mudroom doesn’t have to be just a mudroom. Add a few elements to the room so that the space can be flexible. For example, install a deep wash sink, work surface, floor drain and a compact washing machine to create a multifunctional mudroom.
