They say the satisfaction you get from finishing a project is equal to the amount of effort you put into it. A study done by the National Association of REALTORS® Research Group appears to support the wisdom in that old adage.
About the Joy Score
For the study, researchers crunched numbers to come up with the Joy Score, a figure that shows you how satisfied a homeowner is with a remodeling project. The average score for remodeling projects was 9.6 out of a perfect 10, with 58% of the participants feeling happy and 38% feeling satisfied with their finished projects.
Remodeling Projects With the Highest Joy Scores
Different types of remodeling projects had varying Joy Scores. We’ve listed below the three remodeling projects with the highest Joy Scores and some reasons why homeowners decided to pursue them.
- A comprehensive kitchen remodel (Joy Score of 10) – It’s no surprise that kitchen renovations received a perfect score, given that the kitchen is one of the most-used parts of the home. Nearly half of the homeowners surveyed said improved functionality was the most important benefit they got from a kitchen remodel.
- Closet renovations (Joy Score of 10) – Closet renovations also received a perfect score, which might come as a surprise to some. Many homeowners underestimate the benefits of an organized closet. It can make your home feel less cramped and chaotic, helping you feel more at ease in your home.
- Interior paint jobs (Joy Score of 9.8) – A fresh coat of paint can do wonders for the mood in a room, which is why this improvement received a near-perfect joy score of 9.8.
