How to Make Small Spaces Appear Bigger & Brighter

If you live in an apartment, you may feel that space is always at a premium. But if you’re a creative home remodeler, you can live happily in small quarters by combining space-saving, multifunctional solutions without cramping your personal style. The living room, in particular, is one area in which you can play around with space to make your home look beautiful and welcoming.

  • Remove walls. Make your various spaces flow into one another seamlessly by opening up doorways or walls and allowing adjacent rooms to blend together. You can also widen doorways and open them up to the ceiling to create a larger, more open feeling and an easier flow of movement.

  • Invest in built-in solutions. Custom built-ins will allow you to size furniture specifically for your space and add features to maximize its use. A built-in sofa, for instance, can have hidden storage.

  • Creatively arrange furniture and lighting. Create separation between functional zones by arranging your seating in a way that clearly separates, say, the living room from your dining space. Place different overhead light fixtures in each separate space.

  • Emphasize sources of natural light. Sunlight can do a lot to eliminate shadows that make an enclosed area feel smaller. To create the illusion of more depth and to enhance natural light, place a mirror where it will reflect the light from a window. Consider installing track lighting if natural light is minimal.

  • Use a big rug. It should extend beyond the furniture in each functional space to draw the eye so that the living space appears bigger than it actually is. Conversely, a smaller rug that’s only a bit larger than the coffee table will emphasize a small living space’s limited size.

  • Ditch overstuffed furniture. Oversized heavy furniture can overwhelm a room and make it seem smaller. Opt instead for low-profile, streamlined furniture. Low-to-the-ground furniture provides extra wall space that you can best balance with wall decor that starts low and goes high, such as a large-scale art piece or vertical display shelves that draw the eye up.
