The Do’s & Don’ts of Planning a Kitchen Layout

During a kitchen remodel, one of the most important things that you need to think about is the layout. If done right, it can make a big difference in the aesthetics and functionality of the space. DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of The Woodlands shares these do’s and don’ts to make your kitchen layout work perfectly.

Kitchen Layout Do’s

Eliminate wasted steps.

There will be mornings when you’re rushed and need your daily caffeine fix. However, if the coffee machine is on the other side of the room from the coffee grounds, then you will end up scrambling all around the place. When planning the layout of your kitchen, consider the placement of the things you need. Place your coffee machine next to your coffee grounds and mugs. Store your dishes and utensils near the dishwasher so you can conveniently unload them.

Create wide walkways.

This is one important consideration you shouldn’t overlook when planning your kitchen remodel. Since the kitchen will be a central hub for socializing over meals, you want to make sure that multiple family members or guests can navigate it with ease. As a general rule, your kitchen pathways should be at least 36 inches wide. This way, you don’t have to walk sideways or squeeze around a tight corner.

Kitchen Layout Don’ts

Fail to measure cabinets or appliances before ordering.

This is a common mistake to avoid when planning a kitchen layout. If the cabinets or appliances aren’t sized correctly, movement in and out of the kitchen can be more difficult. The last thing you want is for the refrigerator or oven to stick out like a sore thumb. It is also worth taking the placement of these important elements into account in relation to the traffic flow within the space. See to it that they’re positioned in such a way that when you open them, they don’t force someone who’s cooking or doing meal prep to step aside for a second.

Use poor lighting.

A poorly lit kitchen can detract from the functionality of the space. Since food preparation involves using knives and hot pans, you’ll want the work surfaces to be well-illuminated to minimize potential accidents. Maximize sunlight as well by installing windows in your kitchen, preferably above the sink.
