Accessible Remodeling: How to Find the Right Remodeler

Remodeling projects that involve accessibility improvements require remodelers that have more than just a passing knowledge of such projects. In today’s post, DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of The Woodlands shares a guide to finding the right accessible remodeling contractor.

Researching Contractors

Run an online search for a “remodeling contractor near me” and you’ll get dozens of names. Right off the bat, it will be difficult to filter which ones offer accessible remodeling services. Ideally, filter them through their qualifications first: do they have a valid license and insurance coverage? How are they rated by their customers? Is their website updated? Using these qualifications can help you pare down your list to a few good ones.

Schedule a Consultation

Call the contractors in your list and, before you set an initial consultation, ask them if they offer accessibility remodeling services — better if they have experience with projects that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). During the consultation, you will need to discuss the conditions that require accessibility improvements — wide and curbless egress for wheelchair users, for instance.

At the end of each consultation, you should receive a written estimate, or at least a digital version with the hard copy to be delivered shortly. When comparing estimates, keep in mind that the lowest estimate often isn’t the best. You want to make sure that you’re getting the best quality work and materials.

Evaluating Contractor Qualifications

In addition to the aforementioned contractor license and insurance, take the time to research customer feedback and call the references that they provided during your consultations with them. They may also have provided portfolios, which can be helpful when you’re looking for specific features or styles.

Your prospective remodelers may have systems or workflows that are designed for accessible remodeling projects. For example, our Independence by Design™ at DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of The Woodlands is a design-build approach that is informed by client requirements. Ultimately, all of these factors should help you choose the right accessible remodeling contractor.
