Top Things Homeowners Look For in a Bathroom Remodel

When you’re planning to upgrade your bathroom, don’t focus solely on getting a good deal from your local remodeler. It’s also important to pay attention to emerging design trends and see if they will work well in your bathroom. Recently, the 2021 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study shared some helpful insight into what homeowners look for in terms of features and design elements in the bathroom.

A Spa-Like Atmosphere

Houzz surveyed 2,891 U.S. homeowners and asked them about their recent or planned bathroom remodeling projects. It found that around 40% of the respondents use their bathrooms as a space for rest and relaxation, akin to that of a spa. The popular features of a spa-like bathroom include a clutter-free environment, dimmable lighting and some light greenery. One-third of homeowners added plants during the renovation process since it’s proven that plants help purify indoor air and create a soothing environment.

High-End Features

Around 80% of those interviewed included premium fixtures in their projected bathroom cost, such as a soaking tub integrated with silent whirlpool features with enough space to accommodate two people. Other high-end fixtures to include are rainfall showerheads, dual showers, thermostatic mixers and body sprayers. Granted, they will significantly raise your bathroom cost, but these features will make your bathroom more stylish and functional.

Modern Style

Another takeaway from the recent Houzz study is about homeowners’ style choices. Twenty percent of homeowners decided on modern design aesthetics. Transitional style was the runner-up (19%), with contemporary style not falling far behind (18%). Traditional styles weren’t as favored, dropping to 10% from 12% last year.

White Finishes

White seems to be the top color pick for vanities, countertops and walls. Homeowners often opt for an all-white color scheme for their bathrooms since it makes it look sleek and clean. It also enhances lighting, making even small spaces look spacious. When it comes to contrasting tones, wood vanities and gray non-shower walls are one of the most popular elements.
