Adding a Washer & Dryer to a Bathroom: Factors to Consider

For most people, adding a washer and dryer in the bathroom is not the first thing that comes to mind when planning a bathroom remodel. In today’s post, local bathroom contractor DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of The Woodlands shares why you might want a washer and dryer in your bathroom, and key considerations before adding one.

Things You Should Know

Adding a washer and dryer isn’t as simple as moving them in. The following considerations can help you plan washer-dryer placement.

  • Existing plumbing is more cost-effective. Unless your bathroom remodeling plans include replacing all the bathroom plumbing, consider installing the washer and dryer along existing plumbing. It’s more cost-effective as it will require minimal changes to the water supply and wastewater lines. The same consideration also applies when you’re looking into relocating the toilet, bath and other major fixtures.
  • Stackable machines can maximize vertical space. If you have minimal square footage, choose stackable front-loading units. A good bathroom remodeler can design the placement in such a way that the washer and dryer don’t look like they are out of place. Shelving or cabinets can be built above for extra storage.
  • Place the machine under the counter to maximize vanity space. If you have a large vanity with lots of under-counter space to spare, use it for your washer and dryer. An all-in-one or combo unit (i.e. a combination washer/dryer unit) is perfect for this application because of the vertical limitations. A front-loader is also ideal. Alternatively, you can shorten your vanity and install stacked units.
  • A spare closet creates a cleaner look. A spare linen closet can be converted to a hidden washer/dryer enclosure, which can create a cleaner look. Most closets have enough space to accommodate stacked units but if you’re using just one machine, the vertical space can be converted to storage for detergent and other items.
