Multi-Generational Concept Auxiliary Dwelling Unit: Kitchen

Our clients’ aging parents needed a convenient place to live and liked the idea of living near their son and daughter-in-law but still maintaining their privacy and independence. Since potential disability was a factor, the home needed to be accessible. The solution was a stacked-up ADU (accessory dwelling unit) built above the two-car garage at our clients’ home in the city. We successfully designed the critical kitchen and bath areas by blending accessibility features and modern aesthetics. Here is the kitchen.

Everything needed for cooking is included in the compact and efficient 11-foot long kitchen. The high-quality studio-sized appliances include a 3-tier 18-inch dishwasher, a 24-inch induction range with a recirculating vent hood above, a 24” refrigerator and a microwave drawer. The cabinets are two-toned TFL (thermally fused laminate). In place of handles, servo-drive motors push the doors and drawers out with a gentle touch, providing a streamlined look and an accessibility aid for dexterity issues. A 24” working sink is set in the quartz countertop. This mix of materials is modern, textural, and easy-care. We were part of a team working on ADUs in the metro area, a relatively new concept. We were able to show our clients that accessibility could be tastefully incorporated into a beautiful design in a small space, and that we could handle the project as a package, saving them time and money.

Our clients told us they enjoyed going through our process with us and were pleased with the work we did for them. Their parents appreciate their new home and are pleased to be close to family yet enjoy a measure of independence.
