Urban Kitchen Revitalization

Our clients had lived in their older, character-rich urban home with their three children and a large dog for several years and were very ready to transform their kitchen into a space that adapted to their needs, rather than them adapting to their kitchen. They needed more storage space, more counter space, a more efficient layout, and a beautiful kitchen that would be a joy to work in for the many more years they planned to live in the house.

The kitchen needed a total remodel, with nothing salvageable but appliances. Lighting was inadequate, cabinets were a patchwork of three styles and were in poor condition, and LVT planks had been installed over the multi-layers of the creaky sagging floor that was already raised so high over the adjoining original wood floor that it was a trip hazard. We tore out the soffits, insulated an outside wall, and ripped up all the layers of flooring down to the original wood subfloor before shoring it up with new underlayment. A new commercial grade LVT will give lasting durability for the busy family with minimal upkeep. New duo-toned cabinets in an L-layout efficiently utilize storage space and counter space, and a new lighting system maximizes visibility. The microwave/hood was converted from recirculating to outside venting. The re-worked cooking wall affords more storage while creating a wider clearance to the back entry, and a new vented tall cabinet by the back door houses coats, shoes, bags, and pet supplies. We were the only company wanting to design and install an L-shaped layout and knew that we could run the countertop through to the window ledge to make this layout possible.

The wife exclaimed, “I have so much more storage, I’m not sure what I’m going to put in all the extra space!” (Stay tuned, we will check back in a few months.) They are amazed how quiet and even and stable the floor is, with the young son testing it out with a few excellent gymnastic moves and awesome breakdancing.
