What to Do After Your Remodeling Project

Congratulations! Your kitchen, bathroom or whole-home remodel has just been completed. But before you can enjoy the fruit of your weeks or months of planning and remodeling, here are a few things that you should do.

Final Walk-Through

Your contractor will likely schedule a final walk-through, allowing them to discuss the completed work and you to check its quality. Typically, you will walk through every room that has been renovated. If there is anything that isn’t 100% complete, make sure that it is written down on a list so that your contractor can address it and ensure that you are completely satisfied with the remodel.

Post-Construction Deep Clean

Remodeling can be messy. Generally, good remodelers will take the initiative to reduce or minimize the spread of dust. They may also include post-renovation cleanup in their kitchen or bathroom estimate. However, if you opted out of the cleaning service to save money, you will have to roll up your sleeves for a deep cleaning. Don’t move any furniture or personal items back in until you are done cleaning your new space.

Warranty Registration

If you acquired new products or appliances, take time to review the manuals and fill out the warranty cards. Check if you need to send in the warranties or if you can enter the information online. By registering all your new product warranties now, you can avoid hassle later if you need the warranty coverage.

Insurance Update

Call up your insurance agent and let them know about your remodel. You’ll likely need to adjust the limits of your policy, so it’s best to have the updates done as soon as possible. Depending on the type of remodel, a city assessor may also need to come and appraise your newly renovated home.

Maintenance Checklist

Update or create a new maintenance checklist, especially if your remodel involved materials that you aren’t familiar with. Consult your remodeler as well as the manufacturer to help you learn the proper ways of caring for these materials.
