5 Retro Bathroom Trends Likely to Make a Comeback

There are several reasons why certain retro designs keep coming back. Some think their appeal is based on pure nostalgia or a yearning for simpler times. However, we (and almost all professional designers) hold a different view: retro styles keep coming back because their design has an innate charm or functionality that makes them relevant even in modern times. We believe these vintage bathroom trends deserve a comeback!

 1. Checkerboard Flooring

Checkerboard flooring was a common feature in linoleum-tiled kitchens back in the 1920s and 1930s. Thanks to their versatility, unique patterns and ease of installation, they have experienced a slight resurgence. If you’re considering this floor pattern, it’s best to do away with the linoleum flooring and replace it with ceramic tiles, which are more durable and easier to clean.

2. Terrazzo Tiling

When it comes to durability, few flooring materials come close to terrazzo tiling, a composite material made from a medley of marble chips. Thanks to this exceptional durability—which surpasses that of granite and marble—it wouldn’t be surprising for terrazzo tiling and sinks to make a comeback in the near future.

The only downside of terrazzo is that it’s a bit on the pricey side. But if you’re looking for a durable washstand or sink basin that will last decades, terrazzo basins are worth the investment. Cleaning tip: to make sure water doesn’t penetrate your new terrazzo washstand and sink basins, use a water or solvent-based sealer immediately after polishing the stone.

3. Vintage Washstands

Achieve the same vintage feel as terrazzo by pairing a low-profile sink with a washstand. As an added benefit, the exposed plumbing can bring a certain airiness into any bathroom. You can install modular medicine and linen cabinets to increase the storage space in your bathroom. Important note: while it’s important to stay within your budget, you shouldn’t get too preoccupied with the costs. Focus instead on maximizing the return on your investment.

4. Brass & Vintage Hardware

If you prefer to stick with a traditional vanity cabinet, you can swap out some hardware to add a personal touch. To crank up your bathroom’s nostalgia factor, consider installing hardware made of brass, an alloy that reached peak popularity in the 1980s. Designwise, brass is very warm and can add a bit of glam to your bathroom.

5. Retro-Style Bathroom Wallpaper

Not everyone remembers retro wallpaper. Fortunately, retro-style bathroom wallpaper now has a modern twist: the patterns are larger and brighter. For more retro design tips, consult the bathroom remodeling contractors at DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen.
