Mid-Century Modern Kitchen

Project Name
Mid-Century Modern Kitchen
Project Summary
One step at a time, these young homeowners are making their traditional Cape Cod style home a little more Mid-Century style on the inside. Jumping into remodeling the kitchen during their busy time of life with young children and the unknown of how to make the most of the small space with minimal budget kept plans on the backburner for quite some time. With cabinets now to the point of falling apart, it hit the top of the to-do list.
Project Story
The main constraint of the kitchen remodel was budget. Knowing that this cozy home would not meet their long-term family needs, the remodeling budget was a major factor in design possibilities. Constraints included not being able to remove a wall to open up space, alter arched doorways to match other doorways in the space, change the desk area due to the location of the radiator, or remove the closet pantry to create a better built-in look with the refrigerator. Despite these hindrances, we were able to create an updated kitchen with great style and functionality. The homeowners LOVE the Mid-Century Modern style but because the home itself is more Cape Cod, the designer suggested an understated approach. Their interest in all things artsy and a bit modern definitely needed to shine through with this design. We accomplished this look with slab front cabinet doors for minimal and modern styling, with minimal pulls on the cabinets to let the cabinetry shine. Laminate tops in retro Wilsonart “Betty” without backsplash decorate the kitchen area as well as the desk, and the brushed brass Sputnik chandelier and matching single pendant over the sink top it all off. Increased storage was another must; with the limited footprint of this kitchen, wall space for either base or upper cabinets was limited, and changing the floorplan was not really an option. Maximizing all spaces made the most sense, so we settled on upper cabinets that go to the ceiling; the previous cabinets had a 16 ½” soffit that blocked much of the storage space. We were also able to update the desk area with a pantry cabinet and uppers to create a more built-in look.   The homeowner loved the results, so much so that since completion of this project they have found a larger home to purchase and called to say they will be in touch to have us do “the same” design in their new home!
