Bathroom Lighting: Do’s & Don’ts You Need to Know

Great lighting is essential in every part of your home, but it plays a particularly important role in the bathroom. By placing a light fixture in the wrong spot, you’ll end up with unflattering shadows on your face every time you look in the mirror. To help you make the most of your bathroom lighting, bathroom contractor DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of South Valley shares some do’s and don’ts you need to keep in mind.

Do Maximize the Light

The bathroom is an ideal place to soothe tired muscles and refresh your mind. It is also a great place to bring in lots of light. Make sure your window treatments let the daylight pour in. If you’re designing a new home, a north-facing bathroom will receive indirect light, creating a soft and diffused effect. If desired, add a skylight over your walk-in shower to create a visual statement.

Do Place Fixtures Wisely

When choosing fixtures for a bathroom, opt for four-inch recessed lights for a clean and sleek look. For functionality, an overhead light is a must. Pair the fixture with sconces alongside or above the mirror to make the reflection more flattering. If your mirror receives illumination from behind, you’ll wind up with your face in shadow. Also, use different types of lighting and let your bathroom remodeler arrange them for a more inviting experience.

Don’t Overlook Color Temperature

Color temperature refers to the color of the white light that a light fixture emits. For example, candlelight is warm, reddish-brown and has a color temperature of around 1,800 K. On a snowy winter day, light falls at the other end of the spectrum and has a color temperature of 6,500 K since it is whiter and bluer in shade. In between these two extremes are iridescent light bulbs with a color temperature of 2,700 K. Choosing a light fixture with a very low or very high color temperature can give elements in the bathroom a blue- or amber-colored cast, making it challenging to view colors accurately.

Don’t Dismiss Dimming

A vanity light at full brightness is perfect for shaving or putting on makeup in the morning, but it can disrupt circadian rhythms during nighttime hours. To avoid this, consider a dimmer for your bathroom lighting. Low light not only saves on energy costs, it is also more conducive for relaxing your body and getting ready for bed.
