In an open-plan kitchen, your kitchen island is the star of the show. Due to its sheer size and central position, it is the preferred place to prepare meals, eat and gather. But despite its importance in the kitchen, a lot of people still overlook its lighting.
Now that you are thinking about remodeling, the first thing you should do is formulate a plan. Before reaching out to your kitchen remodeler, you should at least have a vague idea of what kind of lighting setup you want. Not sure where to start? Here are a few ideas.
1. Pendant Lights
We’re putting this at the top of the list since they are the most versatile of all kitchen lighting types. They offer several advantages, such as the ability to adjust the height to suit your needs. You can also customize the number of pendants, which is very useful if your kitchen island is long. You can choose several smaller lights to provide the desired amount of illumination, or stick to the standard three lights.
2. Linear Chandeliers
Unlike regular chandeliers that typically have a square or round configuration, linear chandeliers provide light over a narrower area, which is perfect for kitchen islands. While not as versatile as pendant lights, your kitchen contractor may recommend linear chandeliers if you want to accentuate your kitchen island or any other narrow portion of your kitchen. When shopping around for linear chandeliers, be sure to purchase one with the bulbs facing downwards. The goal is to light up the kitchen island and not the ceiling.
3. Recessed Lighting
As wonderful as pendant lights and linear chandeliers are, they do take up a lot of overhead space. For kitchens with low ceilings, these two options may not be ideal. If that is the case, then we recommend recessed lighting instead. Recessed lighting is installed inside the ceiling so you don’t have to worry about hitting your head on it. It works great alongside general lighting and can also serve as an accent over your kitchen island.
