Creating an accessible bathroom should be one of your priorities when planning a mobility remodeling project. You want this space to be comfortable, safe, and easy to use for you or your physically challenged family members. Fortunately, you can achieve this by working with a dependable contractor.
Accessible Features
Grab Bars
All accessible bathrooms should have grab bars near the toilet and shower. They provide stability and support for people with mobility issues. If there are no grab bars, these individuals have to hold onto the toilet seat, which is unsanitary and unsafe.
Accessible Doorways
Accessible bathrooms should have doorways that are wider than usual to accommodate wheelchair users. The door should be lightweight so people with mobility issues can open and close it without struggling. You can add a horizontal grab bar along the inside of the door so you can easily open it inwards.
A Raised Toilet Seat
Take your bathroom renovation as an opportunity to add a raised toilet seat. It is easier to stand up and sit down on a toilet with a higher seat. Raising the seat of the toilet is also safer for wheelchair users. There should be space on either side of the toilet to allow wheelchair users to transfer onto the seat from both sides.
Easy-to-Reach Amenities
An accessible bathroom has amenities that are easy to reach when seated. Your soap dispenser, towels and other toiletries should be at a lower height than in standard bathrooms. They should also be near the sink so users don’t have to touch their crutches or wheelchair when their hands are wet.
Low-Height Mirrors & Sinks
Other essential features are lowered mirrors and sinks, making them easy to use for people in wheelchairs.
Sufficient Space
Wheelchair users can navigate a bathroom easily if it has enough space. Be sure to allocate sufficient legroom beneath the sink. Also, you should not use the extra space in the bathroom for other purposes, such as a storage or laundry area.
