Simple Ways to Make Your Ceilings Look Higher

High ceilings are effortlessly attractive and elegant. They can create a sense of openness and freedom. This desirable feature also provides more opportunities to decorate rooms. However, not all homes come with tall ceilings. A leading general contractor shares tips to create the illusion of height in your living space.

Choose Low-Slung Furniture

Simple and low-profile furniture draws the eye to the wall instead of the ceiling, making it ideal for rooms with low ceilings. Select pieces with minimalist horizontal elements to further emphasize the distance between the ceiling and furniture.

Paint the Ceiling a Lighter Color

One of the simplest ways to add height to a room is to paint the ceiling a light color. Select a hue that’s lighter than your walls. White paint in a high-gloss finish is an excellent option because it reflects more light.

Use Vertical Patterns

Vertical patterns draw the eye upward, helping elongate rooms. Consider wallpaper with vertical stripes or designs for your home. You can also apply this technique to curtains and decor.

Select Simple Lighting Fixtures

If you want your space to appear like it has more headroom, avoid striking or bold-colored overhead lighting fixtures. Your home remodeler will likely recommend recessed lights if you wish to accentuate the height of your ceiling. They can provide ample illumination without bringing too much attention to the ceiling. You can also use wall, table or floor lamps instead of ceiling lights.

Hang Curtains and Wall Decor Higher

Another way to make ceilings look taller is to hang window treatments higher on the wall. If you have curtains, be sure they come in contact with the floor for added elegance. Moreover, placing wall art and decor higher can create the same effect.
