How to Light Your Kitchen Island

The versatility of kitchen islands is among the top reasons homeowners want them. For instance, an island enables you to talk with your family and friends while cooking, or help your kids do their homework as you prepare dinner. A reliable kitchen remodeler can help you achieve good lighting to ensure the appeal and functionality of your island.

Tips on Lighting a Kitchen Island

Consider the Size of Your Space

Besides beauty, good lighting also improves the safety of your kitchen. It can be dangerous to use sharp tools like knives if it’s not bright enough. The size of your space plays a significant role in creating a kitchen island lighting design. As a general rule, there should be 35-50 lumens per square foot over the island. If you have a 15-square-foot island, you need fixtures that produce around 535 to 750 lumens of light.

Choose a Type of Lighting That Suits Your Space

You can choose among three types of lighting for your space. Pendant lighting is known for its stylishness and functionality. You can have multiple smaller pendants installed to give your kitchen island the illumination it needs.

Unlike pendants, a linear chandelier is just one fixture, making it easier for your kitchen contractor to install. You can get linear chandeliers in various styles, from classic to modern. It’s a great option if you have a smaller kitchen island since it covers a limited area.

Chandeliers and pendants are often not suitable for homes with low ceilings. If this is the case, consider recessed lighting. You can have recessed lights installed around your kitchen and directly above the island. However, the ones lighting up your island may need bulbs that produce more lumens than other fixtures in the room.

Keep the Layout of Your Kitchen in Mind

The layout of your kitchen is another thing to consider when designing lighting for your island. Visualize how the fixtures will look with the rest of the space. If you have an open floor plan, then you’ll need to keep other areas like your living room and dining area in mind. Choose lighting that complements the existing elements of your space.
