Advice You Won’t Hear From Most Home Remodelers

We all want our home remodeling projects to be easy and straightforward – i.e., completed in only a few days with zero setbacks. This is not uncommon with smaller home upgrades. Take on something larger, like a bath or kitchen remodel, however, and you’ll find the project is subject to small complications and even a few big ones. Contractors aren’t always eager to talk about these challenges either.

That’s why as you assess a bath or kitchen estimate, you should consider the type of home remodeler you want to work with. Choose a company that is not only honest with you when things are not A-okay, but unafraid to offer upfront remodeling advice.

  1. “Your home remodeling project may not finish on schedule.” Most home remodeling quotes include the start and end dates of the project. However, this timeline may not be followed to a T. In some cases, the construction work ends up taking longer to complete because of unwelcome surprises. You’ll need to prepare yourself for disappointment and, most importantly, stay patient when a setback does occur.
  2. “Prepare for additional costs.” The overall cost of your bath or kitchen remodel may increase, depending on circumstances. Is there damage that will require additional repair work? Then you can expect an increase in your kitchen or bathroom cost. Have you decided to change certain design aspects of your project? That will take more money, as well. A fund for contingencies is an easy way to deal with any additional expenses. A contingency fund is especially crucial when you’re remodeling an older home since this involves altering existing structural components, plumbing and wiring – which often involves hidden problems and additional funds to deal with them.
  3. “Tell us your remodeling goals in detail.” Make sure to discuss your wants and needs with your home remodeler. This way, they can design and build solutions that will meet those needs. Not all contractors interview their clients in-depth about their remodeling goals. But it’s not entirely on them – some homeowners tend to agree to whatever the remodeler suggests. They end up with a space that looks good but is not the space they need.

At DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Southern Rhode Island, we make it a point to be transparent with our clients about their project. We ensure that all the aspects of the home remodel are laid out, including any challenges that may delay the process, along with the solutions to mitigate them.
