While adjusting to a remodel can be easy for you and your family, it won’t be the same way for Rover or Mittens. Home remodeling generates noise and activity — and the sight of strangers going to and fro inside your home may be stressful for your pets. The good news is there are a couple of ways to mitigate this. One of the trusted home remodeling companies in the area, DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Southern Lakes, shares how to keep your pets safe and happy during a remodel.
- Microchip your pets. This offers a safe and effective way to keep track of your furry friend. Should your pet escape during your home renovation, the local shelter will be able to identify them and call you. As an additional measure, make sure you have a recent photo of your pet just in case you need to put up a lost pet flier.
- Designate a safe space. Normally, your pets are able to roam freely around your home, but this won’t work during a home remodeling project. Keep them safe (while allowing the renovation crew to work efficiently) by creating a safe haven for them. Choose a room that’s far from the work area and keep them inside. Make sure their bed, food and toys are also with them.
- Ask your remodeler about noise and mess. Dust and noise are a constant during a kitchen or bath remodel. Some renovations even emit fumes that are harmful to both people and pets (especially birds). If the home remodel involves asbestos removal, it will be better to move your pet elsewhere. Set them up for boarding or ask a friendly neighbor to keep an eye on them until the project is done.
- Keep up your pet’s normal routine. Adjustments will need to be made during home renovations, but do your best to keep a regular routine with your pets. Feed them at the usual time, take them for a walk and spend some time playing with them like you normally would.
