Rules When It Comes to Mixing & Matching Bathroom Tiles

Tiles are among the most popular flooring and wall material options for bathrooms. Ceramic tiles feature a glazed layer on their surface, making them extremely resistant to water infiltration and staining. They stand up to humidity, making them ideal for moist, hot locations. Plus, tile replacement is a simple bathroom renovation that can give you a high return on investment.

Here are some rules you should follow when mixing and matching bathroom tiles.

Use Busy Patterns in Moderation

Use tiles with unique patterns for your backsplash or another small area in the room, but not on every surface. Combine the busy-patterned tiles with larger plain tiles to keep your space from looking too visually overwhelming.

Combine Matte & Glossy

Tiles that are of similar size look great together if one option is matte and the other is shiny. They will not only make your updated bathroom appear unique, they will also give the space more texture.

Choose Different Shapes, Not Colors

Instead of choosing different tile colors, go for different shapes instead. Select two tile designs in the same color and use the grout lines to create patterns. To add more detail to the tiles, choose a grout color that contrasts with the tile. For instance, choose white subway tiles and black grout.

Or Go for One Shape

Using the same tile shape in your bathroom is an easy way to create a harmonious feel and look. Even if the tiles are in different colors or sizes, they will appear unified.

Don’t Use Too Many Colors

When it comes to bathroom remodeling, make sure that you do not use too many colors. This rule is especially applicable to bathrooms with a lot of different surfaces. For example, using just gray and white in your space will create a luxurious feel and unified look.

Mix Patterned Tiles With Plain

Be sure to use patterned tiles only on one surface. If your bathroom walls are already patterned, then your flooring should be plain. This way, your space will not look too plain nor too busy.

Don’t Be Afraid to Add Some Color

Bright-colored tiles will add a pop of color and visual interest to your bathroom. These tiles work well if they are only used in one area instead of the entire space.
