The Stages of a Kitchen Remodel: What You Need to Know

A kitchen remodel will not only make your space more appealing, it will also increase its functionality. An updated kitchen also offers a high return on investment. If you’re considering selling your home in the future, it is definitely a project that is worth considering.

Knowing what to expect from this renovation can increase the odds of success. Read on to learn more about what each step of a kitchen remodeling project involves.

Have a Vision for Your Renovated Space

The first thing you need to do is to decide what you need and want in your new kitchen. Do you need more space for cooking or storage? Maybe you also want to include a dining area in your updated space. Make a list of things you feel your kitchen needs, as well as features that you want.

Designing & Planning

It pays to invest in an experienced contractor for kitchen renovation. In this stage, you should be brainstorming ideas with your remodeler. You can choose to stick with your current kitchen plan or tweak it. Once you have a concrete plan, your contractor should assist you in obtaining the permits necessary to execute your project. At DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Southern Lakes, we’re here to help you achieve the kitchen of your dreams. From planning to execution, you can count on our skilled team.

Preparing Your Space

You should make plans on how you are going to make meals while your kitchen is being remodeled. Keep in mind that you may not have access to your stove, sink and other appliances during your project. Your remodel may take weeks to complete, so consider moving some of your appliances and setting up a makeshift kitchen.

Demolition & Structural Repairs

At this stage, your old kitchen will be torn out and your contractor will dispose of materials. It is the first stage of the actual renovation. After the cabinetry has been removed, your contractor will perform any necessary repairs on the drywall, subfloors, walls and ceilings.

Electrical, Plumbing & Mechanical System Assessment

Your new kitchen lighting may require adding more wiring or rewiring. Your remodeler should help you find a licensed electrician. Mechanical system issues would also be addressed at this stage. You may need larger ductwork over your stove or microwave for better airflow and improved safety.

Flooring, Cabinetry, Counter & Appliance Installation

Flooring is among the last things your contractor will install to avoid wear and tear of the new material. After the new floor is installed, the cabinets and countertops should follow. Once the countertops and cabinetry are in place, your contractor will install the appliances.

Inspection & Clean-Up

This stage involves doing a walkthrough with your contractor and taking notes of things that you think need more work. Talk to your contractor about any features that don’t satisfy you. Also, expect clean-up to be done at this stage.
