9 Design Tips for Remodeling Small Bathrooms

Planning a bathroom remodel can be tricky, especially if you have a small bathroom. However, it doesn’t have to overwhelm. You can ensure your project is a success by keeping in mind these tried-and-tested small bathroom remodeling tips.

  1. Install corner sinks instead of a pedestal sink. Every inch of space counts, even the space in the corner. You can make better use of this underutilized space by installing a corner sink.
  2. Avoid bathroom features that jut out. As a rule of thumb, avoid installing bathroom features that jut out of the walls, since this will interrupt the flow of movement and take up precious square footage.
  3. Install floating vanities with rounded corners. The space beneath a floating vanity can be used for storage. Make sure to select a rounded vanity cabinet—the sharp edges on square vanities are a safety hazard in cramped spaces.
  4. Opt for an extended counter over the toilet. Here’s an innovative way to add more storage space without reducing your bathroom’s overall square footage: extend the bathroom counter over the toilet.
  5. Install a sliding shower door. Shower doors that open on hinges take up extra space. Space-saving sliding glass shower doors are a better addition to a small bathroom.
  6. Choose a clear shower enclosure. When paired with sliding glass shower doors, a clear shower enclosure can make your bathroom feel more spacious. Clear shower walls and glass shower doors have minimal hardware and result in less visual clutter, creating the illusion of more space.
  7. Install cove lighting or wall sconces on the ceiling. Another way to make a small bathroom look and feel more spacious is to use lighting tricks. Cove lighting or wall sconces give the illusion of a taller ceiling and an open space.
  8. Use large-scale patterns on walls and floors. Large-scale patterns can fool the eye into thinking the walls and floor are more expansive than they are. Here’s a design tip: avoid grid-tile patterns, as these make bathroom space feel smaller. Have a remodeling contractor install bathroom tiles on a diagonal instead. Small grout lines can also enhance the illusion of more space.
  9. Stick to a minimalist design. Speaking of design, it’s best to avoid busy patterns and decorative details if you want to maximize the illusion of space. A busy pattern by itself might not have much visual impact, but when paired with intricate hardware, the two can produce a cumulative cluttering effect that can make a bathroom look cramped.
