Avoiding Sticker Shock During a Kitchen Renovation

With early planning and meticulous budgeting, you can keep kitchen renovations on track and within budget to avoid sticker shock. DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Reno, your trusted remodeler, has some other tips to share.

Do Your Research

It’s important to do your research before starting a remodeling project. Aside from the price of materials, you should also do your research on the patterns and designs that best complement your interior. When it comes to interior design, consistency is key.

Don’t forget to take into account the amount of time it takes to ship materials. Placing orders early on can help you avoid costly project delays.

Craft a Vision for Your Project

It’s important to craft a vision and set expectations for your remodeling project. Setting realistic expectations not only helps you avoid change orders, it helps keep renovations within budget. According to a Houzz survey of 120,000 projects, 40% of the projects surveyed went over budget because of unrealistic expectations.

Here’s a tip: before the initial consultation with your contractor, we recommend making a list of the changes to be made during renovations. It doesn’t have to be complete or comprehensive; the list can be updated with additional tasks after the consultation. This list should give you a fairly good idea of what to expect during your renovations.

Gather Kitchen Estimates

A kitchen estimate should give you an idea of the potential renovation costs. As part of our process, after the initial consultation with your DreamMaker designer and the survey of your home, we will propose several options to give you a better idea of the total renovation costs.

Important note: “estimate” and “quote” are sometimes used interchangeably, but there’s a key difference between the two terms. Kitchen estimates are just educated guesses about the renovation costs and usually given over the phone, while a kitchen quote is more detailed and would normally be provided after an on-site visit.

Avoid Moving Your Sink & Lights

Since replumbing and electrical rewiring requires additional permits and increases renovation costs, it’s best to avoid moving them unless necessary. One more thing: a kitchen renovation is essentially a collaboration between you and your contractor. That’s why it’s important to hire a contractor you can easily get along with and who is committed to transparency throughout the remodeling process.
