The Do’s & Don’ts of Bathroom Lighting

In order to get the most out of your bathroom, you’ll need to have a good understanding of lighting. That’s why bathroom contractor DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Reno has compiled a list of the top four do’s and don’ts when it comes to bathroom lighting.

Do: Plan for Layers of Light

Layered lighting is the use of many types of lighting to create a well-lit and balanced environment. To ensure an even distribution of light, choose a combination of ambient lighting such as chandeliers, pendants or flush mounts. Incorporate a second layer of task lighting for daily grooming activities such as applying makeup and shaving, and a third layer of accent lighting to draw attention to the bathroom’s architectural features and decor.

Do: Consider Different Types of Lighting

Each light in your bathroom should help you see clearly as well as provide atmosphere. Consider your bathroom’s size, ceiling height and lighting to reduce glare and shadows. There are various bathroom lighting options to consider:

  • Task lights. Task lights are frequently placed by a bathroom remodeler near the sink to help you apply cosmetics, shave, brush your teeth, etc. Rather than placing them above the mirror, add task lights on either side to prevent shadows on the face. Consider vertical bathroom lighting bars, pendants and sconces.
  • Ambient lights. These are the lights that provide general lighting throughout the bathroom. Recessed lighting, ceiling-facing light fixtures that reflect light throughout the bathroom, and decorative center light fixtures that radiate light in all directions can all help you achieve this.
  • Accent lights. Directional recessed lighting can be positioned to highlight decor elements. A popular form of accent lighting is under-cabinet lighting that both illuminates bathroom floors and provides low-level illumination for late-night bathroom visits.
  • Decorative lights. These bathroom lighting ideas stand out on their own as design features. Chandeliers, sconces and other decorative lights brighten up your bathroom while also adding elements that showcase your personal style.

Don’t: Not Including Enough Light

If you have a small bathroom, it’s easy to assume that one ceiling light or one sconce above the mirror will suffice. Single lighting fixtures aren’t always enough, even in small spaces. Remember to include multiple sources of light. Lights for general illumination, work areas and focal points are all examples of ambient and accent lighting, respectively.

Don’t: Ignoring CRI

Pay attention to the CRI (Color Rendering Index) of lighting. Skin tone and makeup appear more true to color with a higher CRI, while lights with low CRI make colors appear washed out and dull. The idea is to obtain as near to 100 CRI as possible for best results.
