5 Mistakes You Can Avoid With a Good Window Installer

To ensure the efficiency and maximum longevity of your new windows, it’s crucial for your window installer to carry out every step of the process with attention to detail. At DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Reno, we understand the importance of compliance to manufacturer- and industry-approved standards. By working with our reliable team, you can avoid window installation mistakes and expensive callbacks.

Common Installation Mistakes

Wrong Size of Jambs

As with door replacement, it’s important to have the correct size of jambs for windows. If you’re ordering replacement windows with the jambs attached, make sure to include the width of the jambs if the surface of your interior walls is tongue-and-groove, plaster or any material thicker than half-inch drywall. You should also add the width of a jamb when installing a new window onto sheathing that is thicker than 7/16 of an inch.

Wrong Size of Rough Opening

Windows have different rough opening requirements, depending on the manufacturer and style. While standard window sizes are offered by several manufacturers, you may need to have your new windows custom-built to ensure they fit the rough opening. A good window installer will take all necessary measurements, making sure your replacement windows have a watertight fit.

Failure to Seal the Nailing Fins

The window replacement process should include proper sealing underneath the nailing fins. Fins that aren’t an integral part of the window unit must be sealed to the frame as well. Your window installer can do this by rolling the flashing tape or membrane over the fin and up onto the edge of the window frame.

Incorrect Installation of Head Flashing

Rigid head flashing, or drip cap, should already be included in the window flashing system and not installed afterwards. For your peace of mind, you can ask about the installation of head flashing and other window components prior to the start of the project.

Poor Flashing Adherence

Dust, debris and moisture should be removed from the window sills and weather-resistant barrier to ensure the proper adherence of flashing tapes and membranes.
