3 Key Features of Accessible Toilets

When planning a mobility remodeling project, one essential feature to consider is your toilet. You want a toilet that is easy and comfortable to use, especially for physically challenged loved ones. An accessible toilet is definitely worth investing in if you are aging in place. Here are features you should look for when choosing an accessible toilet.

Toilet Height

The ADA guidelines state that toilets should have a height of 17 to 19 inches. With a higher toilet seat, it is easier to lower, stand and transfer from a wheelchair or walker to the toilet. One way to increase the height of your toilet is to add a thicker seat. This is an ideal option if replacing the toilet itself is not possible. If you have the budget, a wall-hung toilet can be mounted at the height that feels most comfortable for you.

Placement of Fixtures

A toilet paper dispenser is a great feature to add to your bathroom remodel. For maximum convenience, make sure to have it installed at a comfortable height that’s forward of the bowl. You may also consider getting a bidet.

For increased safety, experts recommend installing at least one grab bar beside the toilet at a distance of 18 inches to the nearest wall or fixture. Mirrors and sinks should be at a lower height so people in wheelchairs can use them with ease. Soap, towels and other toiletries should all be within reach when seated.

Doorway Width

Accessible bathroom doorways should be wider than traditional ones for easier wheelchair access. No threshold should obstruct the entrance, and you should be able to open the door without exerting too much effort. Also, the door should open outwards so you can open it easily during emergencies.
