Rules for Designing a Small Bedroom

You want your bedroom to be cozy and stylish and have enough space for your stuff. However, it’s harder to achieve these goals if you don’t have much square footage to work with. A small bedroom often ends up looking cluttered. Today, our home remodeling experts share some important rules to follow when designing a small bedroom.

Keep It Simple

It’s typical to place the bed against one of the walls of a small bedroom. However, this isn’t the only option. You can even place the bed in the middle of the room or at an angle in the corner. Doing so will give you room to walk on all sides of the bedroom, which is key for traffic flow.

Use Mirrors

Mirrors help small spaces look more expansive and airy. They also reflect natural light, making your bedroom brighter. You can place medium to large mirrors above the headboard or on the wall across from your bed.

Consider Folding Furniture

Make the most of your floor space by investing in furniture that folds up. For instance, a Murphy bed is great for a studio apartment or guest bedroom. There are also versatile fold-out desks that you can use as a makeup or crafting table.

Include Sliding Doors

In your next interior remodeling project, consider sliding doors. These doors are not only easy to use but they are also space-savers. They are stylish and won’t get in the way of your furniture. A small bedroom won’t feel too closed in with a frosted glass pocket door. Make your doors more stylish by replacing the knobs.

Don’t Be Afraid to Go Bold

A bold statement in your bedroom will not only make your space more stylish, it will also bring the focus away from the size of the room. You could choose a unique color for the wall or a distinct wallpaper. Eye-catching furniture pieces can also become the focal point of your bedroom.

Say No to Clutter

Clutter makes your space look and feel cramped. Only place the furniture that you need and use. While a bench at the foot of your bed would look nice, it would interrupt traffic flow. Instead of adding a second dresser, consider using nightstands with large, deep drawers.
