How can you tell if your contractor is doing a great job of bringing your home remodeling vision to life? DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Orland Park, the premier local home remodeling contractor, shares some things you should look out for in this post.
Check Out Completed Projects
To gauge the ability of your contractor, start off by looking at completed projects on their website. If possible, ask if you can view completed projects firsthand to see the quality of their work. Here are a few things you should look at when checking out workmanship:
- Tile. A capable interior remodeling contractor will ensure that tiles are installed with the appropriate spacing and no uneven or jutted tiles. Also, the grout lines should be smooth and thin. This creates uniformity and is a textbook sign that the tilework is properly done.
- Trim. Your barometer for a quality trim installation is if it appears geometrical and straight. The corners should be mitered smoothly and the casing around the windows and doors should be uniform and neat. There should be no nail holes or obvious seams. This indicates that the nail holes were filled with putty to make the trim look finished.
- Doors and cabinets. A good indicator of a well-installed cabinet or door is if it can be easily opened and closed. However, a door that’s difficult to operate doesn’t necessarily mean that the doors were hung poorly. They could stick due to expansion caused by the weather.
- Lighting. Is the lighting appropriate for the home it’s installed in? Are lights evenly spaced? Are the light bulbs functioning properly? Also, look to see if the dimmers are functional, since some contractors make mistakes in installing them, which may result in flickering or other malfunction.
- Countertops. The kitchen countertops shouldn’t have oddly positioned seams or gaps filled with caulking. This is a telltale sign that the workmanship wasn’t done well. The countertop should appear clean with the original finish intact.
