Choosing the Right Cabinets for Your Bathroom

When you pursue a bathroom remodel, one of the first things you need to think of is cabinet configuration. They are integral to form and function in the room, after all. Whatever your needs and preferences, keep in mind these factors.

Bathroom Floor Space

Bathrooms are usually the smallest rooms in your home, despite being one of the most widely used. To free up valuable floor space, you can install wall-mounted cabinets.

Placement & Flow of Movement

Another advantage of installing wall-mounted cabinets is that they don’t interfere with the flow of movement in the bathroom. If you prefer a floating vanity cabinet, here are some rules to remember:

  • There should be at least 21 inches of free space in front of a vanity cabinet or toilet. (This is usually a requirement of local building codes.)
  • There should also be enough space around a vanity cabinet to install a mirror and lighting.
  • The bathroom and shower doors should be able to swing open without hitting anything.

Storage Space

Don’t forget the primary purpose of bathroom cabinets: storage space. Wider vanity cabinets provide more storage space but take up more floor space, while narrow vanity cabinets have less storage space but are easier to move around and position in your bathroom. Not sure how much storage space you need in your bathroom? Here’s a quick tip: check how many items are currently in your vanity cabinet—this should give you a good idea of your storage needs.

Style

Bathroom upgrades aren’t restricted to functionality—the bathroom’s design and aesthetics are just as important. Installing a cabinet that complements other bathroom elements can help create a relaxing environment. To make sure you get value for your money, it’s best to stick to a classic design. Here are some tips for picking a cabinet with a timeless design.

  • You can never go wrong with white. White is timeless, neutral and clean.
  • Embrace vintage designs. If you want to add a bit more personality to your bathroom, installing antique-style cabinets would be a good choice.
  • Marble and limestone elements complement antique cabinets and contrast nicely with white cabinets. There’s a reason why marble and limestone have been used for centuries in homes and buildings.

For a bit more variety, you can experiment with different cabinet styles. However, mixing and matching styles can be a bit tricky. Your trusted bathroom remodeling contractors can help you pick a cabinet that fits in perfectly with the rest of your bathroom.
