Debunking 3 Common Aging-in-Place Myths

If you are thinking about hiring a remodeling company to make your home more accessible as you age, then you’ve probably already done a bit of research about aging in place. There is a lot of information available online but, unfortunately, not all of it is accurate. If you remain undecided because of several misconceptions surrounding aging-in-place design, then we’re here to reassure you that they are probably just that: myths.

So before you contact your mobility remodeling contractor to ask for a bathroom quote, here are three common aging-in-place myths, busted!

Myth #1: Making Your Home More Accessible Is Expensive

It seems like a lot of myths about aging in place have to do with its price tag and how prohibitive it is. However, there are creative, low-cost fixes that are easy on the pocketbook. For instance, if you do not have the budget to completely replace your sink, ask your mobility remodeling company to remove the base cabinets to allow a person in a wheelchair to pull up to it. And instead of spending hundreds or even thousands of dollars to install a safer bathtub, you can stick anti-slip strips on your existing one and install handrails.

Myth #2: You Should Wait Until You Need It

What people don’t realize is that aging-in-place design is firmly rooted in the principles of universal design, which focuses on creating spaces that are accessible to everyone, regardless of age and physical abilities. A universal design space will have features that still make sense even if you don’t have physical challenges, and that will be in place should you need them as you age.

Myth #3: Homes With Accessible Features Are Difficult to Sell

These days, more and more people are becoming aware of the importance of aging-in-place features. After all, most of us probably have loved ones or friends with disabilities or who are advanced in age. A universally designed home can actually be easier to sell since even young families appreciate smart home features and older buyers wish to stay in their own homes as they age.
