If you’re swapping out flooring as part of your interior remodeling project, two of the most popular flooring options are carpet and hardwood. These materials each have their pros and cons, which can make it a little more difficult to choose between the two. In this post, DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Orland Park discusses the various factors that you should consider if you’re uncertain about which flooring option to select.
Appearance
Carpet comes in a wide range of colors, textures and designs. It can complement almost any interior design. Since carpet is usually soft to the feel, it can lend a softer appearance to a room and also cushion feet. Hardwood, on the other hand, can also fit a variety of home styles. Its appeal mainly lies in its natural tone and pattern of the wood’s grain, which changes depending on the species of wood.
Care & Cleaning
Carpet maintenance isn’t particularly difficult as routine cleaning can be done by vacuuming. The challenge, however, is dealing with stains because they tend to set permanently if you don’t act quickly or use the wrong cleaner. Hardwood is a lot easier to clean. Sweeping or vacuuming can remove loose dirt, while damp-mopping with a wood cleaner can do the trick if you’re dealing with mud and stains.
Water & Heat Resistance
In the case of carpet, the synthetic fibers usually make it highly resistant to water damage. However, you need to ensure that moisture doesn’t seep down into the padding or to the wood subfloor. Otherwise, there’s a risk for mold to grow underneath the carpet itself. That said, carpets aren’t a good choice for wet areas like bathrooms and kitchens where spills are a common occurrence. When it comes to heat resistance, carpet can be easily damaged by heat.
Hardwood flooring is also not recommended for areas where there is frequent moisture. If you really love the look of wood, you might want to consider engineered wood flooring, which may be stable enough for these conditions. Take note that hardwood can be damaged by intense heat as well, but if you’re dealing with mild scorch marks, they can be sanded out and the surface refinished to look good again.
