Bathroom Layout Dos and Don’ts Every Homeowner Should Know

When planning your bathroom remodel, you’ll need to start from its most important aspect: the layout. A well-designed one makes navigating the bathroom easier while allowing you to choose designs and features that can perfectly suit the exact needs of your space. DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Omaha, the trusted remodeling company in the area, shares a few bathroom layout dos and don’ts you might want to check out:

DO utilize natural light to the best effect.

Sufficient access to natural light evokes a friendlier, more relaxing feel in the bathroom. Not only that, but it also helps illuminate the space, effectively reducing artificial light use at certain times of the day. Consider positioning key features in the bathroom, such as the sink, mirror, or vanity, near the windows. This provides you with a convenient light source for routine tasks like shaving or applying makeup.

DON’T make the toilet visible from the doorway.

The general rule of thumb when planning a bathroom layout is to never open the door to view the toilet. Consider having your home remodel company create an alcove for the toilet in one corner, so it won’t be the first thing upon entering the space. Keeping it hidden behind a screen or partition should also work. Just make sure that the toilet’s position allows for at least 8 inches of elbow room on both sides.

DO keep the tub or shower area separate.

This is especially important if the bathroom is shared. By creating a ‘room within the room’ for the designated wet areas, a family member can take a shower or soak in the tub in relative privacy, while still keeping the sink and toilet handy for anybody who needs them. If a queue still forms outside the bathroom every morning, you should consider updating your powder room instead so family members can use it to get ready for the day.

DON’T overlook the negative space.

It’s mighty tempting to fill every corner of your bathroom with all the additional features you want. But you should still take negative space into account. For example, make sure that every bathroom feature is scaled right; you’ll want to be able to walk across the room without bumping into anything. Leave at least three inches between the vanity unit and the wall or shower screen, and provide a width of at least 32 inches for the water closet. There should also be enough room so that you can fully extend vanity drawers and cabinet doors without interrupting the walkway.
