In the United States, there are at least 30 million people using wheelchairs, and this number is expected to grow as the population ages. For these Americans, having an accessible bathroom is an absolute necessity. Accessible Features
1. Wide Doorways
Average wheelchairs can measure up to 32 inches wide, with most ranging from 21 to 30 inches wide. For this reason, you will need a doorway that is wide enough for a wheelchair user to easily roll in and out. The door should be made of lightweight material so that it opens with a minimal amount of force. Also, it should always open outwards so that it can still be opened easily in case of emergencies.
2. A Raised Toilet Seat
A person who is confined to a wheelchair may find it difficult, not to mention dangerous, to use a standard toilet. During a bathroom remodel, ask your contractor to install an ADA-compliant toilet that is 17-19 inches from floor to seat.
3. Grab Bars
Grab bars are also an essential part of an accessible bathroom as they provide support and stability for a wheelchair user transferring onto the toilet or using the bath or shower. Without them, a wheelchair user will have to hold onto the toilet seat, which is both unsafe and unhygienic.
4. Wide-Open Space
Accessible bathrooms should have enough space for wheelchairs to turn and maneuver. Ideally, there should be extra space on each side of the toilet so that a wheelchair user can transfer to the toilet from either side. The sink should also have enough space underneath for legroom.
5. An Emergency Alarm
Lastly, your accessible bathroom will need an emergency alarm cord to ensure that if anyone slips, they can call for help easily. Also, the switch to turn it off should not be installed outside the bathroom so that anyone who is alerted for help will have to check inside before turning it off.
