Featured Project: A Place to Gather

These empty-nesters were more than ready to renovate the well-used 24-yr old kitchen in their 1992 home. The minor cosmetic face-lifts (new paint and carpet) made in 2006 had lost their luster long ago. Along with modernizing the kitchen, they knew it was time to create an open space their large family of 6 married children & 20 grandchildren could be comfortable in.

Unlike the growing family using it, the kitchen was frozen in the 90’s. The white laminate counter tops, faded discolored maple cabinets, and hammered 2’’ maple flooring were at the top of the demo list. Although the clients claimed no particular style, their wish-list for the renewed kitchen implied an Industrial Farmhouse feel.

Homeowner’s Wish List

  • Open Concept
  • Lots of White Shaker Cabinets
  • Dark Island Cabinets
  • Marble-like Counter Tops
  • White Subway Backsplash
  • Huge Window over a Farmhouse Sink
  • A Large Island
  • Space for a Large Farm Table
  • Mix of Metals and Woods

The dining room wall was removed in order to create a continuous flow from the kitchen to the dining and living areas. Plumbing was relocated to the outside wall and an expansive window was added, so the homeowners can now enjoy the beautiful view of their scenic backyard. A baking center including open shelving, counter space, and double ovens was added, which makes multiple cooks in the kitchen a painless effort.

Space is the common theme of the renewed kitchen. The open concept allows for twice as much space in the dining room. The homeowners have noticed that the fresh white pantry cabinets framing the refrigerator allot more space than their former corner pantry. Finally, the counter space has been doubled and the large island is an excellent buffet area for their family events.

The homeowners enjoy many parts of their kitchen, but it’s the small details that really add to the excitement. A beautiful re-claimed wood barn door separates the kitchen from the front sitting room. This keeps the kitchen open to the rest of the house, but allows privacy when needed. The Dutch door adds a quaint homey feel, but serves a functional purpose of allowing air circulation if it becomes crowded and stuffy. The stylish pendant pineapple and industrial light fixtures add character and charm to the kitchen.

Overall, the kitchen has transformed into a welcoming and inviting space for their family and friends to enjoy. They have used it for several family dinners and other events and are truly enjoying all it has to offer.
