Tips on Balancing Style and Function in Your Kitchen Remodel

It is often said that good kitchen design should have a good balance between style and function. It’s not as easy as it sounds, but with some careful planning and not rushing a kitchen quote can achieve great results. In today’s post, DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Ogden shares some tips on how to balance style and function in your kitchen remodel.

Clearly Define Your Remodeling Goals

A good plan should always have a solid foundation, and the best way to start your kitchen remodeling plan is by defining your goals. Since kitchen design is hinged on workflows, assess your current kitchen and note the parts that you want to keep, and the ones that you think need to be changed. Ask yourself: are you having trouble moving between work areas? Do you think your kitchen needs new equipment? Is the kitchen showing its age?

Organize your remodeling goals into must-haves or “hard” goals, and wish list items or “soft” goals. The latter can be considered as things that are nice to have, but can be eschewed if they will cause delays or an increase in cost. Sharing these goals with your remodeler will help make sure that you are on the same page, from drawing a kitchen estimate to completing the project.

Optimize the Floor Plan

The floor plan or layout is difficult to change once the project is completed, so it has to be carefully planned for maximum efficiency. Traditional design concepts can be a good starting point if you don’t have a plan in mind just yet. One such concept is the kitchen triangle, which utilizes three workstations: sink, stove and refrigerator. Setting them equilaterally allows efficiency of movement. Since no two kitchens are exactly the same, you’ll have to adapt the concept to what suits your kitchen workflow, which can then be applied to the floor plan. Once you have established your goals and defined your floor plan, everything else — from plumbing placement to material selection — will fall into place.
