What Homeowners Look For in a Bathroom Renovation

When it comes to updating your bathroom, don’t just focus on getting an accurate bathroom quote  from a prospective remodeler. You also have to keep an eye on the latest design trends and whether they’re a good fit for your home. Fortunately, the 2021 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study provides a glimpse into homeowners’ desires in terms of features and elements they want to incorporate into their space.

Here’s a look at the various design features homeowners look for in a bathroom renovation, based on the findings of the aforementioned study.

Popular Features

A Spa-Like Feel

The study, which surveyed 2,891 U.S. homeowners on Houzz about their recent or planned bathroom remodeling projects, found that about 40% of them use their newly renovated space for relaxation. Noteworthy features of a spa-like bathroom include a lack of clutter, dimmable lighting and greenery. Almost a third of them added plants while renovating because they find them to help purify the air and ensure a calm, soothing environment.

Premium Bathroom Features

Nearly 80% of the surveyed homeowners incorporated premium features into their bathrooms. For baths, they chose soaking tubs equipped with a silent whirlpool feature and enough space to accommodate two people. Rainfall showerheads, dual showers, body sprayers and thermostatic mixers are some of the prominent shower upgrades that appeared in the study. The overall bathroom cost might be significant, but these features add a much-needed boost to a bathroom’s aesthetic appeal and functionality.

Modern Bathroom Style

One takeaway from the latest Houzz study is about homeowners’ style choices for their bathroom renovation. Nearly 90% decided to switch things up, with modern (20%) being the most popular design aesthetic they went for. Transitional comes in second, with contemporary not too far behind. Traditional style wasn’t as favored last year, dropping to 10% from the previous year’s 12%.

White Finishes

White is the top color of choice for vanities, countertops and both shower and non-shower walls. Homeowners desire an all-white color palette for their bathrooms to create a sense of cleanliness. It also helps enhance lighting, giving small spaces an airy look and feel. As far as contrasting tones are concerned, wood vanities and gray non-shower walls are popular elements.
